An Easy List of Instructions on the Optimal Way to Effectively Employ the Alfresco Website WCM

Friday, March 12th, 2010

In today’s world many businesses demand an effective method of utilizing online info, and web content management systems (WCM) can fulfill this requirement. Recent WCM systems can be used in conjunction with most other types of software . To get the most out of a WCM you should ensure that it — and you — can fulfill the following points.

Visit and review this really informative source for CMS web content management pointers!

Before choosing a WCM system, businesses need to be aware of how these differ from other available WCM programs. The Alfresco CMS receives and manages basic data in different forms. This data is then made available to the firm’s personnel and also off-site viewers who have been approved.

The work flow of a WCM must be smooth and universal. In addition, see if your WCM is able to edit the data in question. Envisage the process as being like the input section on a moderator’s blog page or even the comments area on the public side of a blog. If for some reason info has not been processed, then your WCM is unsuitable. Make sure that your WCM can deal with customized characteristics like proprietary software and/or files, alternate layouts to name but a few. It ought to be noted that the above is only a fraction of how to effectively use your WCM.

Instead, what we are looking for is a code that has been analyzed by the WCM and can be understood by net browsers. All of this amounts to being able to read computer programming languages like HTML, CSS, PHP as well as others.

Naturally, security makes for another important function for this style of in-house web content management system. It can encompass keeping appropriate data private and accessible only by staff within the company, as well as approved off-site visitors.

The Alfresco CMS combines collection and end direction to immensely enhance the manner in which info is dealt with. Because the system has been integrated together, there is a lowered risk of security problems, working with streams of information, errors in the composition, and more time assignable to more important tasks.

The Painless Way to Set up Your Website

Monday, November 9th, 2009

Choosing the best domain name and nailing down the right registration are the initial matters to think over when planning a website. But, it can be a pretty baffling and all-important choice. At the end of the day, the best way to ensure that all your needs are fulfilled is to spend time on some painstaking research of domain hosting companies by checking out all available customer reviews. When you read domain hosting reviews, how to find out what is helpful information and what isn’t? Before you make any choices you must determine which features are crucial to your market. Many people opt to have their Web pages hosted by the same provider they use for their domain registration. Support is an issue that could have effects even long after your domain is registered.

Any feedback found on the hosting provider’s website won’t be sufficient to base a decision on. In order to define the best suited Web registration for you, you must always get an impartial evaluation. You should make an effort to look at as much client feedback as you can and give some thought to the reviewers’ feedback. Do you read any issues over and again? Can you determine the company’s strengths from the comments? Do good reviews outbalance the bad reviews?

As with any company, you should read positive and negative comments. It’s generally a good idea to read all the reviews with objectivity and weigh them all. Without a shadow of a doubt, the importance of price shouldn’t be overlooked, but think about which extras are offered for the price. Below are a few questions to mull over when determining the most suitable hosting for your company.

During what times of day does the provider you are researching provide customer support? Do they have a toll free telephone number, and do the remarks show a fast response time? What is their guaranteed uptime? Can they ensure that it will be >99%? How much bandwidth will be available to you? You can negotiate a bundle with unlimited hosting and bandwidth, and sometimes you may be in line for other rewards like software packages and even vouchers for pay per click campaigns. What sort of payment options are available? Can every payment be approved one by one or is there a less time consuming alternative, and are rebates extended for payment in full? In the case of a server going off-line, what happens?

Ultimately this is completely your choice, but before you decide, be sure you have looked into all your options. Reading multiple domain hosting reviews will give you the chance of saving time and money at some later point.

How To Increase Web Site Traffic

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Remember Biana’s three principles of turning your web site into a cash cow? Here are the three principles:

* Your web site must be easy to navigate, understand and use.

* Your web site must discuss what you do AND how what you do will benefit your customers.

* Your web site must have a newsletter that helps you keep in touch with your visitors and customers.

However, a web site that has all of the features listed above is not all that’s needed to get leads and customers for your business. To get the most out of your web site, you need to ensure that the site generates targeted web site traffic.

So how do you increase Internet traffic to your web site? Here are three proven, time-tested methods for generating targeted web site traffic:

* Optimize Your Web Site for Search Engines. Search engine optimization is the process of modifying web page content and meta-information to improve the search engine ranking of the page. Meta-information includes HTML tags (title, heading, emphasized text, keyword and description meta-tags), as well as the internal (links between pages on the same site) and external (links between pages on different sites) link structure of a web site.

Using good keywords to optimize your web site for search engines helps you bring targeted traffic to your web site. * Create a Business Blog. A business blog is an excellent tool to toot your own horn, let the world know about your new products, and tell your target customers why they should do business with you, rather than your competitor.

Blog posts that are keyword-rich help you bring targeted traffic from search engines, and blog posts that are educational and interesting to read help you build relationships with people who read your blog. Strive to make your blog posts optimized and educational – that way you get the search engines and your readers interested in what you have to say.

* Write Articles. Writing articles on your subject of expertise is an excellent way to get better known throughout your online community and to let target clients know about your expertise.

Syndicating (allowing other web sites to reprint) your articles also helps you build traffic to your web site. So how can giving the proverbial farm away help you build traffic? The terms of use of your article state that reprinting in any form is allowed only if the site that uses the article includes a resource box. A resource box is a block of text that appears after the article. It typically consists of 2-4 sentences that include your bio and a link back to your business web site.

The article’s resource box is your chance to get the reader to visit your web site and thus generate additional traffic. This is why it is extremely important to make your resource box as effective as possible. The resource box must include a strong call to action (and a free bonus gift doesn’t hurt either).

Targeted web site traffic translates into leads and clients for your business. Start using the traffic generating methods outlined above and watch your traffic soar.

Social Networking and Keeping Your Password Safe

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Not so long ago, when browsing the web, you might have had just one password to store for your email address. These days however, it’s not unusual to have dozens of passwords created for innumerous web services you’ve joined. And what happens? Lots of people are inclined to use the very same password for all or nearly all the services they’ve signed up to. Some individuals may not think their Facebook photo gallery as being hugely vital, but it is if you’re using the very same password for that as you are for your PayPal account. Of course, it’s easier to only have to remember one password, but what happens if someone gets their hands on that one password? That’s right, they in theory have their mitts on all of the servives you’ve signed up to that share that very same password. And if you think they don’t know the other online services you’ve signed up to, it isn’t essential. They can run web application programs which test tens of thousands of services and try to match your account name/password pair that they know about.

This is a problem we all have to think about, but it can be solved. The truth is, it’s not required to remember each and every account name/password. Why? Your browser can remember this information. Be it your Yahoo Login or Email password. Just ask your browser to store each account name/password, and then setup a central password (“master password”) just in case a person else gets physical access to your computer. If they do have such access, they will have to key in the master password in order to login to any of the services you’ve signed up to. Or to put it another way, you can join dozens of services, and merely have to actually remember one single password : your web browser’s master password (achieving what you wanted to do in a safe way – necessitating in just one password.

When making passwords, make them random and long, such as X4563Jde34 which is an assortment of numbers, lower and upper case characters. Since it’s not required to remember them, be as obscure as you like. A word of warning : don’t use normal words as a password, as these are elementary to identify for hackers.

If you build it, they will come…not!

About twice a week now I am contacted by a hotel General Manager or Marketing Director who has seen some of the recent research figures for hotel internet revenues that says something like “In 2005 hotel revenues from the internet were 25.0% of all hotel room revenues…”.

The conversation very quickly gets to “I’ve just checked my on-line revenues and they are nowhere near that. What can we do?”

Naturally, the first thing I do is look at their web site. Some are visually stunning, especially on a high speed connection…beautiful “flash” movies (loading, loading, loading), navigation buttons that do pirouettes, music…and usually a mega investment has been made (please give me the name of that sales person, I have some sand that I would like them to sell for me in the Middle East)…and barely an extra room night to show for it.

Why? Because the site turns up on page 17 on Google, Yahoo! or MSN when you search for a suitable keyword or phrase (usually “destination + hotel” eg “Sydney hotel” is the most popular search term in most cities).

70-80% of online activity is people searching for something…all those lost souls who are eager to buy your hotel rooms, if only they could find you…in fact in one recent case, when I was searching for the prospective client’s hotel by it’s very own name their web site turned up way back on page 8 of Google. You and I both know that when we search, if it ain’t on pages 1 or 2 or at a pinch page 3, we’re just not going to look further…and neither does anyone else.

If you retain nothing more from my article please remember this: search engines are blind to images (and deaf if you play music on your site) and especially can’t see “flash” movie files or the text in those fancy navigation buttons (these are images too)…a search engine is a code and text driven binary agent that reads written instructions and words…so without the right code in the “back” of your site and the right text and density of keywords on the “front” pages of your site…you just won’t turn up in the first few pages of search results.

Don’t get me wrong…there IS a place for great visuals and dynamic, inspiring content AFTER you have got them to your site. The overuse and abuse of these dynamic elements is indeed a hurdle to your search engine results, but once the user has arrived, then you need some “bells and whistles” to convert them into a sale (more about conversion in one of my next articles).

Some web sites I see, even for premium properties, are just dogs that were last updated in 2003 (because every time they want a change their designer charges like a wounded bull); and lots of others are in-between but because the sites are not actively managed, they still don’t turn up in the first few pages.

Believe the research data! With 25% of revenues arriving via online channels and a further 25% being influenced by their online experience but booking via another channel, you just have to get your head into this space. Can you imagine what would happen if you ignored your convention market or stopped dealing with the travel industry…as a first step, at least sign up to my weekly “best of the best” e-mail (www.hotelmarketingworkshop.com/register/), so you can start to develop your knowledgebase in this vital area.

Over the next couple of articles I’ll address some of the other questions that I usually ask such as: what e-mail marketing they are doing and how, have they investigated the Pay-per-click options at Google Adwords, Yahoo! Search Marketing or MSN (coming soon) or how easy is it to book on their site. I’ll also touch on conversion but let’s focus in the short term on driving traffic to your site.

So, what can you do? Invest in the Search Engine Optimisation of you site… the art and science of maximising a web site’s ranking in the “natural” Search Engine Results for a key phrase. There is a lot to understand but if you visit our web site you will find some very useful tips and specific things that you can do to optimise your hotel web site…or of course you could give me a call or send me an e-mail and I would be more than happy walk you through the basic principles.

And you know what? I never get calls from hotels that have a smart, well designed but not too “tizzy” site. One that is edited in-house utilising a user-friendly Content Management System. Sites where you can easily navigate around without needing a helmet lamp and pick, that have fresh, recent content and special value-added packages; where you can actually book in real-time through a secure connection and get an instant confirmation. And when you need to make an online enquiry, it is easy and doesn’t ask for my shoe size and twenty other compulsory fields before begrudgingly sending off the data, only for it to take two days for someone to respond…

These sites already turn up in the first few pages, offer a great user experience and these hotels actively manage their online presence…they are well on their way to achieving and exceeding those 25.0% of revenues online that the research people are telling us…and, pardon the shameful plug but, quite a few of them are our clients!

Importance Of Search Engines And Designing A SEO Website

Monday, June 8th, 2009

The vast resource of information available on the internet today is in the form of various classes. For example, when we talk about a mosquito repellant – there are websites that market the product, websites that offer manufacturing know-how, websites that provide simple information on the topic and websites that just simply talk about mosquito repellants. The importance of information posted on a business website is always to the end of selling and making profits. Therefore, the information which is business oriented should be displayed to the customers at all times. Now that all this is taken care of, how to make sure that a particular website is found by the visitor? There could be millions of websites dealing in the same product. This is where the concept and process of search engine optimization comes in. The need to develop or design the site to be search engine friendly takes the drivers seat here, in an effort to optimize a particular site out of the billions on the internet today.

Search engine majors like MSN, Google, Yahoo and AltaVista crawl through the internet perpetually by using programs called bots or spiders. Their function is to read the websites and file them into a category and finally index them in a huge catalog. When a visitor accesses a search engine and types in his search criterion, the search engines scan their indexes for a match and display the results, out of which the visitor can select a website to visit. Exactly how this index is made is still a puzzle that many professionals are trying to solve. However, thank god for small favors, some secrets are known.

Using these known secrets, it is possible to design a website by keeping them in mind to ensure that the website ranks highest in the search engine results. In this multi-pronged advantageous process, the higher a website is ranked, the higher is the traffic. Moreover, if the website stays there continuously, it builds credibility amongst potential customers and the traffic builds automatically.

The whole process of search engine optimization generally takes about 3 to 4 months after the design phase is over. This is the time taken by the crawlers to finalize the index after numerous visits. Submissions to search engines is another option but not necessary because, all search engines automatically crawl and find new websites on a continued basis.

The demand for search engine optimization is immense today.

For Great Rankings, Content Is King

Monday, June 8th, 2009

For years, so-called experts and real experts have published ebooks on how to beat the search engines, how to use them to your own ends, and how to perform all kinds of tricks to make your page rank higher.

The truth is, tricks don’t work long-term. Search engine spam has been greatly cut down, if not eradicated, by the last change Google made. No one really knows the precise secrets of how key words in text work. And though inbound links are great, when everyone has the same inbound link sources, it starts getting tricky to edge out the competition.

The one proven and consistent way to get great rankings from the search engines is through good, accurate, and fresh content.

What Makes Content Great?

The first consideration for your content is how well it works for people visiting your site, not web spiders. You’re not selling products to programs, but to people. The first thing you need to do is write a good article that is pertinent to your site, without worrying about what it may do to search engine placement.

At this point, a lot of webmasters make a serious error: they use a content generator to create keyword-optimized nonsense. No matter how well done this is, it performs two functions: first, it makes the customers mad. If you’re depending on affiliate sales, placing third in Google rankings will not do you any good when your potential customers click away in disgust.

The second thing it does is allow the search engines to locate unnatural structures. Nonsense text will have a number of structures within it that are extremely rare in the English language: fig booty, for instance, is not likely to turn up anywhere. By comparing your document with billions of others, search engines can tell whether you have an overly large number of these structures. If you do, your ranking will sink like a rock.

But the text. Once your excellent article is written, you can go through and optimize it for your keyword. Don’t aim too hard at a specific number of mentions for your keyword; about 5% is good, but if it doesn’t work, don’t force it. If you’ve written your article properly, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding places for your keyword. If possible, slip keyword mentions into any header text and into the first and last paragraph.

In addition to this, spellcheck and pay attention to your grammar. A poorly written and spelled article screams amateur, and no one trusts that.

If you don’t feel comfortable writing this article, you can hire a professional copywriter for very reasonable prices these days. Look for someone who specializes in web content and keyword articles.

Graphics: Helping Your Placement

Search engines key on text, not graphics, so the more text you have on your home page and subsequent pages, the better you’ll do with placement. Even though graphics can be visually appealing, text helps pull in the web spiders. Always try to put your text together first and insert your images last.

When you do insert images, always fill out the alternate text for the image with a description including your keyword. This is a nifty little trick that can also boost your page ranking. And if your images are a critical part of your sales – for instance, if you sell posters – always put the name of the work or a description of the product in the alternate text so that the new image search engines can find it easily. Make sure your descriptions reflect the image and don’t include inappropriate keywords.

My Mistakes as a Web Design Newbie

Learn from them

Approaching retirement age I was made redundant last year and decided to create my first web site, initially knowing little about it. I hope that, by reading about my experiences, I may save you both time and money if you ever find yourself in the position of wanting to build a site with little initial knowledge.

eBooks I bought five or six ebooks on how to make my web fortune from the one-page web-sites that you see on the web. The prices ranged from $9.95 to $29.95. It would be unfair of me to say that they were of no use, as you can always pick up the odd pointer, or contact. However, with the benefit of hindsight I would not have purchased any of them. Instead there are free, better written books which give you at least the same pointers, and often have more substance. You can download from my web site, for free, two excellent books by Ken Evoy, which will provide you with a good basic knowledge to move forward. Don’t get carried away with the sales hype contained in some of these “get rich quick” single page sales letters that offer huge free bonuses and an imminent price increase.

Universities and colleges There are various colleges and universities on the web which promise you the ultimate in web creation, site marketing, search engine optimization and much more, “all under one roof” They usually have libraries of “how to” books and membership is by monthly subscription with some offering a lower fee for the first month. Have a look, by all means, I looked at three and claimed my refund within the stated period. I found that I could obtain similar information offered for free with a little searching, and that what they really offered was convenience.

Web Design software I initially purchased a web site building package for $69.95 and was soon disappointed by its lack of functionality. I then looked over the shoulder of a friend whilst they showed me the workings of a top-end product costing nearly $400.00 but I found it to be too complicated with too steep a learning curve too be quickly productive. I posted a request for help on the Warriors forum and there were more recommends for a particular product than any other. So I decided that my first web site would be a review of that product, which I would create as a trial, before I went on to build a site that would aim at generating income.

What should the web site be about? Several of the books that I read suggested that the subject matter should be about something that you enjoy doing and therefore you will create your site with more passion and enthusiasm. Whilst this is sound advice I found that the need to create a trial site, which would force me to learn the basics, was more than a sufficient driving force.

Domain name & Web hosting Go for a dot com registration and pay no more than $10 per annum. Don’t go for free hosting, you get what you pay for. I looked at hosting sites that offered complete package with hosting, autoresponders, SEO and linking software and much more. Whilst everything was conveniently in one place they failed to convince me that each product would stack up well if they were competing in each niche market. I therefore opted for the best of breed approach and a little less convenience.

Search Engine Optimization This was probably the subject that I was most worried about as I new that it referred to making a web site as easy as possible for the search engines to find, but I had no clue as to how to go about it. I have a free ebook that you can download entitled “Search Engine Optimization Made Easy” which will give you the basics to carry out this process. The book is really a plug by the author of SEO software for his excellent product. I was fortunate in that the web design software I selected also, somewhat unusually, held my hand through this process, carefully pointing out page, by page, what I needed to do.

Article Distribution I was aware that, in order to succeed, I should submit articles to the numerous Article Directories present on the Internet. There are two ways to do this. By purchasing one of the two major pieces of software to assist me in doing it myself, or to use a company to do it for me. I looked at each way and found that, whilst both software solutions cut out some of the tedious manuals tasks of submitting to over 150 directories, it was still time consuming. Having examined the market place carefully, discounting any company who charged for a fixed number of submissions, I opted for one who for a fixed quarterly fee would submit any number of articles.

Link software Again, so that I would get more site traffic, I new that I should get other sites to link to mine and that I would have to manage those links and the emails back and forth etc. I initially started to design an Excel spreadsheet linked to Microsoft Word but decided that I would still have to create the links pages by hand. My advice is to obtain software which houses all your links in a searchable database, handles all of the emails, including template housing, and that automatically creates the HTML link pages for you.
