Fair Grounds: New Grounds
Thursday, February 5th, 2009
The city of New Orleans has been widely associated with jazz, the Hornets, voodoo, and the Mardi Gras. This year, Quarter Horse racing has recently been added to the notable list. Though not an alien to horse racing, New Orleans will definitely benefit from the position it is in – Fair Grounds has been named as Quarter Horse racing’s newest home. Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots will open its doors to the Quarter Horse meet come August 20.
There is no doubt that Fair Grounds is set for bigger things, especially if one looks at the facts. The company that owns Fair Grounds also owns Churchill Downs in Kentucky. What with Churchill Downs being the home of the Kentucky Derby, there is no doubt that Fair Grounds will house huge horse racing events in the near future. Also, from a historical point of view, Fair Grounds is the third oldest race venue for thoroughbred racing.
The upcoming Quarter Horse meet at Fair Grounds is also a historical milestone; it’s the venue’s first ever event that is exclusive for Quarter Horses only.
This move to name Fair Grounds in New Orleans as the new home for Quarter Horse racing is a clear indication of the breed’s popularity in the United States.
