Become a Student Pt One

Monday, March 8th, 2010

This is a four-part strategy article that everyone should know about if you’re looking to take full advantage of poker online and Texas Hold ‘Em. In this first part we’re going to talk about using your features. The first feature you’ll notice on most sites is the ability to take notes and add tags to online poker players. Learn to use this feature. Take notes on everything, how they played against certain betting lines, what their bet sizes mean, how they bet when they have the nuts, and on and on and on. This will do two things for you. First it’ll help you if you encounter this player later on down the line, and it’ll help you in the online poker game if you get put into a situation with them. Second it’ll help you get more observant and start watching other players. One wise player once said that you start to move from beginner to intermediate when you can start worrying about what the other player is holding and not just what you’re holding in your hand. So notes, notes, and more notes. And when you think you’ve written down everything you can about a player, write down some more because I assure you there’s more to every player than just your first impression. Remember just as you’re trying to get better, so are the other players, so they style may change and your notes may become obsolete.

Building Poker Community

Monday, February 1st, 2010

In every poker online hand, it is you against the world. You are the only one at the online poker table who controls your destiny, and likely the only one who wants to see you win. Because of the competitive nature of the game, it can be easy to find yourself neck deep in a field of aggression and exclusivityit can, in fact, seem a very lonely world if you let it. But in fact, the poker community is much more than just a place where players go to face off. With the popularity of online poker, and countless internet forums, message boards, email groups, and etc., it seems to me there is more of a poker community thriving now than there ever has been. There are more ways to spread information, to share theory and experiential feedback, to further the game by taking it from a personal, private matter, to a community where people share ideas. Involving yourself in these ways, or simply by interacting with those you meet at the table kindly, is good for the game. It helps promote the growth and bring in new players, which up front means new money and new blood. Poker exposure and goodwill is good for everybody.

Poker Tactics for Beginners

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Newcomers to the game of poker are often nave about how to use skill and tactics to win instead of relying on luck. Once a player gets a little experience at the casino, it becomes obvious that there is a lot more to the game than luck and a lot of different nuances and tactics to observe.

Sometimes trying to keep everything straight – position, betting amounts, other players actions, hand rankings, board texture, etc. – makes it hard to know what to do when it is your turn.

Here are some helpful poker tips to follow:

If your hand is not one of the best starting hands, i.e. pocket Aces or faces, AK, suited faces, pairs better than 7s, then fold.

When you do have a good starting hand, bet or raise.

If the flop does not improve your hand and you are not holding the best possible pair, then fold.

If the flop has improved your hand, such as completing pocket 9s to a set of three, raise.

If the turn and river do not improve your hand, but make a better hand possible than yours, i.e. three to a suit that can complete a flush to beat your set, then fold to a bet. If you are checked, then make a small bet, but fold if you are raised.

When your hand improves after the turn and river, then raise.

The Whole Hog

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

The hog roast we enjoy today hasn’t altered much from the time of our ancestors, although we have become a little more sophisticated with our spit roasting techniques, adding herbs and marinades to produce incredible flavours while slowly turning the hog roast over wood or gas flames. Our caveman ancestors would also have had problems with their cooking times to begin with; you can imagine their hog roast, crispy on one side and rare on the other. I’m sure they also had their very own Marco Pierre White who got rather angry with anyone who complained their spit roast was over cooked.Portable hog roasting or spit roasting has become very fashionable and is now a stock menu item at many weddings. A whole hog goes a long way and feeds up to 120 guests when served into a bun or bread roll. So besides the succulent mouth watering flavour of a hog spit roast you are getting incredible value for your money plus you have the added bonus of a theatrical event. There’s usually a gasp of delight when the hog is raised from its oven and the heady aroma assails your nostrils as the sight of the golden brown hog with magnificent crispy crackling comes in to view.

Limits to Limit Hold ‘Em

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Limit Hold ‘Em and No Limit Hold ‘Em are close relatives, but they have some very important strategy variances. After years of playing no limit poker online , I sat down at my first limit table at the casino feeling like a pro, but soon started feeling like a rookie.

online poker Limit Hold ‘Em comes with a limit on how much you can raise in each betting round. For example, in 3-6 Limit, you can raise a maximum of $3 per bet after you get your hole cards, and $6 every hand after that. With raises and re-raises, there is enough money to keep thing interesting, but it’s an unusual feeling to have your betting restricted.

The raise limits really make a difference in how you play your hands. First and foremost, your bluffing loses a lot of its effectiveness when you can’t push your whole stack into the middle.

It’s also difficult to protect your hand. When I get a big pocket pair, I usually try to chase out players with weak hands to protect myself from someone drawing two small pair on the flop. With a large pocket pair I’ll put in a good-sized raise pre-flop just to chase out all the stragglers. In Limit, that’s impossible-more often than not, you need the cards to win.

Fair Grounds: New Grounds

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

The city of New Orleans has been widely associated with jazz, the Hornets, voodoo, and the Mardi Gras. This year, Quarter Horse racing has recently been added to the notable list. Though not an alien to horse racing, New Orleans will definitely benefit from the position it is in – Fair Grounds has been named as Quarter Horse racing’s newest home. Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots will open its doors to the Quarter Horse meet come August 20.

There is no doubt that Fair Grounds is set for bigger things, especially if one looks at the facts. The company that owns Fair Grounds also owns Churchill Downs in Kentucky. What with Churchill Downs being the home of the Kentucky Derby, there is no doubt that Fair Grounds will house huge horse racing events in the near future. Also, from a historical point of view, Fair Grounds is the third oldest race venue for thoroughbred racing.

The upcoming Quarter Horse meet at Fair Grounds is also a historical milestone; it’s the venue’s first ever event that is exclusive for Quarter Horses only.

This move to name Fair Grounds in New Orleans as the new home for Quarter Horse racing is a clear indication of the breed’s popularity in the United States.

Hunches in Poker and Blackjack

Friday, January 16th, 2009

When it comes to playing games like poker and blackjack, there’s one solid truth that everyone should know. I’ll say it right now and get it out of the way: hunches will screw you. If you play by your gut in blackjack or poker, you will lose your money and walk away pissed, especially in blackjack. Unlike in poker where you can at least try to pick up on another player’s tics and mannerisms, this isn’t a game of bluffing. Blackjack is a game of odds and if you play the odds, you will come away a winner in the long run.

I know that right now you’re thinking of some time that you made a bad decision and it paid off. Even I’m doing that right now. Once I had a seventeen with three cards and the dealer showed a nine, so I hit. I got a four for twenty-one and the dealer had nineteen. I won there, but that hand had me playing against the odds so many times after that hand that there’s no counting how much money that hand cost me in the long run.

With blackjack there is always one right decision. If you have a twelve and the dealer is showing a nine, you hit. Even if you bust, you’ve made the right choice, and if you keep making that right choice, you’ll win more than you lose.

If you need the excitement every now and then, go ahead and play with your gut. Just make it the exception rather than the rule.
